Old Abandoned Ruins Unknown Day

With a grunt, the completely covered scavenger was able to pull open a drawer. She found a first aid kit inside, as well as a machine that looked like a Geiger counter. She knew these would be useful, so she took them, but since her pockets will probably get full, she searched until she found a backpack.

She thought it looked sturdy and usable, so she placed her loot inside and placed it on her back. Alright, let’s check the rest of the place for food and other useful stuff and then get out, don’t want to encounter an infected or worse, a bandit. She thought as she made her way into the kitchen and began searching the fridge and the cabinet. She hoped to find food, or at least cans, though she knew she’d need a can opener if she found cans.

Unbeknownst to the scavenger, someone was watching them. From his point of view, the watcher could see the scavenger through a window, but little else. Bringing his rifle to bear, he quietly approached to get a better look and make a decision then.

Kana silently searched, but she found no cans or anything she’d call food. She wasn’t worried. She knew that her dad had some food set up and waiting for her back at her home. The half-elf has been trying to head there and hoping there was some sign that her daddy was alright as she had a feeling he would be. Thinking it was time to leave, she prepared to turn when she thought she heard a noise-causing her to duck. She tried to keep herself calm as she tried to wait and see what happened, but she had her gun prepared.

Hearing the noise as well, the watcher fell flat on the ground, eyes alert under his gas mask. He was about to rise from his place when he saw it. A timberwolf. A clearly wild one, and worse of all, mutated if the misty white third eye orbiting his left one was any indication. The watcher seized up in uncertainty, should he fire upon this beast or should he simply let it pass.

The mutant made his choice for him when he ducked inside the ruins.

Kana silently cursed her luck as she soon heard the sounds of a Timberwolf. She’d recognized the sounds, and she continued to try keeping calm and soon she was at the point of the house where she’d be able to shoot if she needed to. She hoped that this one would not be a mutated creature, but with her luck, she knew that must be impossible.

It was soon proven when she saw the creature before her, causing her to fire with her trained marksmanship skills to perform a headshot. She didn’t have the skills to tame and control the creature sadly.

Despite its mutation, the beast’s famed speed and instincts were unaffected. The headshot became a grazing shot that only further angered the timberwolf into a frenzy as it lunged for Kana.

The hidden man, rifle aimed at the source of the noises, mulled over what to do. Help the scavenger or wait for the timberwolf to do its grisly work and collect the rewards. With a soft spoken curse, he made his decision and entered the ruins.

Kana cursed as the beast was able to dodge the hit-making her attack only a graze. As the young half-elf dodged the lunge, her hearing picked up another entering the ruins. She could tell this was a booted person, which didn’t tell her much since she’d seen some infected wearing footwear. Now the mutated creature will have two threats to deal with either way.

The wolf noticed its prey’s distraction and capitalized on it. Rushing the half-elf, jaws open wide, fangs glistening with saliva, only for a shot to ring out and the canine’s head fell apart. The quick metallic twang of a lever resounded and the drop of a shell announced the presence of the shooter. He was a man, tall with blonde hair, wearing a varsity jacket with a tactical rig over it. Any features were obscured by the gas mask he wore. After making sure the animal was dead, he turned his gaze at the half-elf. He did not raise his rifle. Nor did he lower it. He simply stared.

Kana gritted her teeth as the wolf charged at her, only for it to die as the shot happened. She got to her feet slowly as she observed the man. “Thanks for the save, I appreciate it. ’ She said as she straightened up. The backpack she wore shifted slightly on her back. She saw that he didn’t seem to be crazed, so likely not infected, but whether he was a bandit or not, she didn’t know.

An awkward silence stretched out before the two, as the masked man could think of nothing to say. Eventually, with a shuffle of his feet he spoke. “Nice weather we’re having.”

Kana blinked when she finally got a reply from the man and she chuckled. “Yeah, isn’t it great?” she asked in reply with some sarcasm. She thought she owed him one, so she began edging back to leave the ruins.

As he saw the now revealed female leaving, he raised a hand. “No, wait!” His voice had an edge of panic to it. He sighed and tugged one of the straps on his vest. “Look, I’m not good at this, but you're the only person I’ve seen in the last months that hasn’t tried to kill me or eat me. We can work together.”

Kana turned back as she heard him speak, and he could detect the panic in his voice. When he continued to speak, she realized he was right, and the reverse was true as he hadn’t tried to kill or eat her too. She thought that it would be better to have another working with her. “I think that sounds like a good idea. Two are better than one,” She replied in response.

“Great, that’s great. Cool. Awesome. Groovy… And I’m rambling.” the masked man said sheepishly. “What’s your name? I’m Kon- ehhh. Kenny. Just Kenny.”

Kana couldn’t help but grin as he rambled, and then finally her companion introduced herself. “I’m Kana” she said and did a cute little curtsied. “I couldn’t find food in there, but I did find some other useful items as well as the backpack I have,” she said, indicating the backpack with her thumb.

“Nice to meet you, Kana. I haven’t found much either. Seems most places are already ransacked. Have you cleared out this place yet?” Now that he had a moment to look around he saw that the now dipalated ruins were once a home, a nice one by all accounts but it seemed to have caught a small skirmish between the military and some other faction.

Kana nodded in agreement, he was right most were ransacked already and some she couldn’t enter because she hadn’t been able to climb up. She realized with him now partnering up, she might be able to. “No, mostly the lower floors, inside there was a raised balcony with what might have been stairs, alone, I couldn’t get up there, but since you’re here and we’re working together we might be able to go up there,” she said and began leading the way back inside and indicated what she was talking about. “From the looks of things, there's a closet up there, and I think a second bathroom and most likely bedrooms.”

“You’re right. I think I can boost ya up there.” He stowed his rifle away on it’s sling. He cupped his hand together and braced himself. “You should be lighter, I’ll boost you up and then you can lift me. Ready?”

Kana nodded and she moved so that she could get on his hands that he cupped and with that, she used him to boost herself up and onto the balcony. She could see that there was a room down the hall, but she turned her focus back to him and then stuck out her arms to help him up. Her hood shifted, causing her to become distracted as it went in her face. She pushed it back, and it fell backward revealing her ears as she pulled him up. “There we go, now you’re up to, ” she said and made her way down the hall.

Kenny’s mask disguised his surprise at her elven heritage, something he was thankful for. He was impressed that the Ashen Order hadn’t found her yet in their mission to purge the world of “nonhuman filth”. He pulled himself up with the half-elf’s help. “Thanks. Let’s see what we can dig up here.”

Kana silently pulled the hood back into place covering her ears and continued on her way. “This room looks like a bedroom,” she said as she peeked in to see that indeed it was a bedroom. She saw a messy bed, and she could almost tell there were dust on some of the furniture, but she was sure they could find something here.

“Yeah. Maybe there’s something under the bed.” Kenny proposed. Kneeling down, he reached around and found a small cardboard box. He began piling anything of use on top of the bed. A comic book, light enough to carry and avoid boredom. A torn jacket sleeve that seemed to have been used as a DIY wipe. A pocket knife. A claw hammer. And a can of motor oil? “Curious and curiouser. Not a weird place for it, truth be told.” he turned to Kana. “Find anything?”

Kana glanced over to him as he searched, then she went into the closet. “Let’s see... Wait, I can see something, there’s a box of something here,” she said, pulling out a box of cherry bombs. “Oh shit, cherry bombs!” She said as she gently placed the box down. “With my dad’s watchful eye, I’d made some when I was younger. The owner of the room must have been able to do the same. “ She commented as she went back into the closet, only careful this time. “I think I see something metallic at the back there. I’m hoping it’s a vacuum cleaner but based on Cherry bombs, I'm not sure I like what I am thinking.”

“Eeeeh, perhaps it’s better if we didn’t mess with it.” he replied. “I really don’t want to risk it.”

Looking around, nothing more of interest could be found. Kenny pointed to the door. “Wanna check the other rooms?”

Kana nodded her head as she got up and carefully stepped back. “Yeah, let's check them out, ” she replied as she turned to follow him.

The next room’s doorway has definitely seen better days. It probably had a door once in a while. But two things popped up to Kenny’s attention. Or rather two holes. Two precise holes where the door hinges would’ve been…

Somebody had breached this room.

Shouldering his lever action rifle, he drew his sidearm, a custom Moses Hi Power, with personalized wooden grips and some small engravings. Truly, a collector’s item. It would do the job.

Leveling his gun, he entered the room and… then he saw it.

“Guess we found the owner,” he said to Kana. The owner had been a middle aged man. He’d been wearing what seemed to be his pyjamas. And someone had shot his face with enough buckshot to render his head into a red liquid paste.

Flies gathered in the iron scented sweet pile of blood, sinew and bone, feasting to their hearts desire. Kenny was thankful once more he had acquired this gas mask.

“At least he tried to put up a fight.” Kenny said, gesturing to the fallen shotgun by the body. It seemed to be a Warsaw 1911, a rare semi auto model.

Kana followed Kenny, into the room with her own weapon, the M1 Garand rifle raised and ready to be fired if she had to. When the half elf saw the sight before her, she grimaced, but like Kenny she was thankful for the gas mask she had, and once again, she was grateful that she listened to her dad who had taught her its importance.

She turned her head away from the body to look around to see if the guy who had breached before them was still there, dead or if he or she got away.

This room seemed to be a simple office that had already been ransacked of anything valuable. Kenny, holstering his sidearm and kneeled. Picking up the shotgun and wiping the thin layer of dust, he could tell it was still in working condition. Racking the pump and checking the shell chamber, he was even luckier. Fully loaded.

“Well, it seems this guy didn’t even get to fire off a single round. Damn shame.” he eventually said, rising up. Looking at Kana, he gestured toward the Warsaw shotgun. “Ya mind if I keep this?”

Kana turned her head to watch him, taking note of the shotgun. She nodded” fine with me, ” she said, thinking that she’ll need to trust him if they had to survive. She then turned to look and see what she could find.

After a few minutes of searching, they found nothing else of note. Leaving the broken down home, Kenny turned towards Kana. “So what’s the plan now? You heading somewhere or just wandering, like me?”

Kana was bothered that they couldn’t find anything of use, but she did know of a place. She followed him out of the house and glanced at him when he spoke to her. “Mostly it's been wandering, finding things I could use, but I am running low on some food, so there was a place I was heading to. What about you? I’ve been thinking sometimes two are better than one, and so far you’ve proven I can trust you, so if you're interested, care to keep partnering up?’ She asked him through the mask.

“Well… To be honest, you’re practically the only friendly face I’ve seen in a long while. Can’t say I’m not tempted.” said Kenny. Sighing as he shouldered his newly acquired shotgun. “Are you sure though? Behind this mask, I might be a mutant or a crazy ax killer like in the movies?”

Kana chuckled when he finished speaking. “Not sure about you being a mutant, but you don’t seem t be a crazy ax killer, I mean we wouldn’t have had a conversation by now. I’d have been killed, or had your way with my body like some of those I’ve seen. She shifted the weight of her rifle and with her final statement done, she proceeded to turn and move on while keeping her eye out for trouble, though she trusted him to watch her back.

She couldn’t help but think of her dad. Was he alive in all this chaos? Her heart told her yes, he was alive, he wouldn’t die in this, she was certain he was alive but she just needed to find him. Her head turned as she heard something, someone approached.
